"Don't Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi" for Critical Enterprise Apps, Cisco Says

One example of why additional Wi-Fi spectrum is required: the 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi spectrum now is so congested that Cisco recommends it not be used for any critical enterprise application.

“The use of the 2.4 GHz band is not considered suitable for use for any business and/or mission critical enterprise applications,” Cisco now says.

Cisco and Apple now recommend a 5-GHz-only coverage design when designing for Apple devices on a Cisco wireless network.

The reason is simple: loading and congestion on the 5 GHz channels is generally much lower than the 2.4 GHz channels, and there are more channels available for the network to use. Also, 5-GHz channels do not compete with Bluetooth, video cameras, and microwave ovens.

a wireless network typically reaches capacity when the utilization reaches between 40 to 50% on an average. For latency sensitive and real time applications like VoWLAN, channel utilization over 30% may potentially impact the end-user experience.
