Latin Mobile Carriers Far Short of 2020 Spectrum Requirements

By definition, more capacity is required to serve more customers, all other things being equal, and that is the case in Latin America and the Caribbean, where mobile service adoption is about 111 percent.

A new analysis of spectrum allocation in Latin America suggests mobile operators there are quite some ways short of the capacity they will require 2020.

By 2020, mobile broadband will be purchased by  91 percent of all mobile accounts in the region. New services, applications and devices will increase mobile bandwidth consumption at 50 percent compound annual growth rates to 2020.

In part, spectrum harmonization is helpful for service providers, device suppliers and customers because it allows standardization, with higher volumes, which reduces costs.

By March 2017, the 850 MHz band is the only common spectrum offered in all Latin American markets. About 13 of them have awarded the 1.7/2.1 GHz band (1710-1755 MHz paired up with 2110-2155 MHz)3 and eight markets have allowed the use of the 2.5 GHz (2500 MHz to 2690 MHz) band for the provision of mobile services.

Some 10 countries have awarded the 700 MHz band for mobile broadband.
