Mid-Tier Cable Operator Wi-Fi Roaming Service Launched by Kyrio

CableLabs, the cable industry research and development organization, has a subsidiary creating a roaming service for mid-sized U.S. cable operators, allowing them to interoperate with the network of CableWiFi Alliance hotspots operated by the largest U.S. cable operators.

A nationwide roaming agreement of that kind could help provide a wider geographical footprint to support any future Wi-Fi-first mobile service.

The CableWiFi Alliance was formed in 2012 by Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cox Communications and now has about 500,000 locations. Non-member Charter recently acquired TWC and Bright House while Altice of France acquired Cablevision but, so far at least, the roaming arrangements remain in place.

Kyrio, the company that offers the roaming service, also offers security and device testing services, as well as CableLabs’ Go2Broadband (G2B) service that allows cable operators and others to interconnect customer activation systems.
