Mobile Gains New Spectrum At WRC-15

Mobile service providers likely are happy with decisions reached at the International Telecommunications Union’s recently-concluded World Radiocommunications Conference.

Additional spectrum has been made available for mobility purposes in various parts of the world.

New Spectrum for Mobile Communications Approved at WRC-15
Spectrum
Region
470 – 694/698 MHz (600 MHz)
Americas and APAC
694 – 790 MHz (700 MHz, Region 1)
EMEA
1427 – 1518 MHz (L-band)
Global
3300 – 3400 MHz
some countries
3400 – 3600 MHz (C-band)
Global
3600 – 3700 MHz (C-band)
some countries
4800 – 4990 MHz
some countries, APAC, Americas

WRC-15 attendees also agreed to study, at WRC-19, frequencies above 24 GHz for 5G mobile services.

The frequencies to be studied include 24.25-27.5 GHz, 31.8-33.4 GHz, 37-43.5 GHz, 45.5-50.2 GHz, 50.4-52.6 GHz, 66-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz.

Though some will dispute the relative roles of spectrum and network architecture as primary drivers of new capacity, Ericsson argues that vast expansion of demand will drive the need for multiple methods to increase capacity.
