Smartphone Sales to Climb in 2020 After 2019 Drop

Global sales of smartphones to end users are on track to reach 1.57 billion units in 2020, an increase of three percent year over year, Gartner says.

In 2019, worldwide smartphone sales declined two percent,  the first time since 2008 that the global smartphone market experienced a decline. Longer handset replacement cycles are one reason for the slowdown; oversupply at the high end and mature markets are other reasons.

Gartner forecasts that sales of 5G mobile phones will total 221 million units in 2020, accounting for 12 percent of overall mobile phone sales. 5G share will more than double in 2021, to 489 million units.

The Middle East and North Africa will see growth rates of nearly six percent, mature Asia/Pacific will nearly match that, while Greater China (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) grows at a bit over five percent, Gartner predicts.
