Unlicensed spectrum has been important in the communications business for some time, obviously to the extent that Wi-Fi supports both local area network and mobile phone connectivity, as well as supporting any number of fixed wireless use cases.
New standards for 4G allow Wi-Fi spectrum to be functionally bonded to mobile assets, and that trend will, according to many working on 5G standards, also be a trend for 5G.
At some point, there might be nearly a gigaHertz of unlicensed spectrum usable in some way by 5G networks.
