5G Leadership Can be Counted Any Number of Ways

As always when comparing markets and technology adoption, it matters how one counts. Consider the issue of which country will lead in 5G adoption. And there, it matters whether one counts 5G accounts as a percentage of total mobile accounts, absolute number of accounts or revenue earned providing the 5G services.

Using the percentage-of-accounts methodology, North America, particularly the United States, will, with South Korea, have the highest levels of 5G account adoption. That accounts for the claim that North America will be a global leader in 5G adoption, with total subscribers projected to hit 345 million by 2025, according to the GSMA.

More than one quarter of global mobile revenue comes from North America, which can be attributed to the continent's historically high consumer spending on mobile services, GSMA Intelligence says.

Measured other ways, including total number of accounts in service, China will become the world’s leading market for 5G early in 2020, predicts CCS Insight. By 2025, China may have 1.2 billion 5G connections, more than 40 percent  of the global total.
