Business models remain a key issue for public Wi-Fi networks operated by cities, a new study by the Wireless Broadband Alliance suggests. Generally speaking, services are provided “for free.”
“The potential benefits and revenue streams from deployments are not yet quantifiable which is slowing down deployments,” the study suggests. “Although infrastructure is ready and tested in-field, some deployment launches are on hold in absence of visibility on clear monetization plans.”
“Current deployments are very dependent on funding from the cities, which is not sustainable,” the report says.
