Rich Communication services was intended to be the mobile service provider replacement for text messaging and a potential competitor to multimedia messaging offered by hyperscale app providers. That has not happened, and is unlikely to happen.
Instead, it has turned into a marketing tool used by businesses. The possible exception is that RCS is the messaging format favored by Google, which has no direct at-scale competitor to Apple or Facebook’s messaging platforms and bases its Android messaging client on RCS.
