Mobile Data Consumption Grows 88% in 1 Year

As a practical matter, 5G is necessary strictly as a platform to increase mobile network capacity. The ability to support new services is nice, but bandwidth features are essential. Simply, 5G is a better way to increase capacity than relying on 4G enhancements. We are close to the point where additional 4G capacity performance gains will moderate.

Global monthly mobile data traffic grew close to 88 percent between the fourth quarter of 2017 and fourth quarter of  2018, Ericsson notes. “This is the highest growth rate seen since Q2 2013, when traffic grew by 89 percent.”

“When comparing the growth in actual traffic volume, the additional traffic in 2018 is 15 times larger than the additional traffic in 2013,” says Ericsson.
