5G Will be the Lead Offer, but 4G Will Do the Heavy Lifting

5G will be the lead offer, but 4G will do the heavy lifting for U.S. consumer mobility. Think of the way gigabit internet access leads marketing offers in the fixed network internet access business. Most customers do not buy the lead offer when there are a range of choices for speed and corresponding price.

And, early on, it is possible that many of the 5G platforms will rely on lower-frequency spectrum and Wi-Fi offload, especially as 4G speeds are ramped up. Small cells using millimeter wave spectrum are most likely to be seen in dense urban areas, at first, as that is where the capacity demand is highest, and millimeter wave spectrum adds the most value.

The difference will be instances where millimeter wave spectrum and 5G are used to support fixed wireless services, which really require the capacity boost millimeter wave spectrum provides. But even those areas might be cherry picked, to allow efficient marketing.

Being careful that way will reduce the risk of introducing dense small networks prematurely, before business models require the additional capacity.
