Mobile Supplies 94.4% of Internet Access Connections in India

Only about 5.5 percent of internet access connections in India are supplied by the traditional fixed network, nearly all the rest (94.4 percent) being supplied by the mobile network. With the caveat that enterprises rely significantly on the fixed network, it is easy to suggest that, with 5G coming, consumer internet access in India will continue to be lead by the mobile operators.

The total mobile subscriber base in India increased from 1,049.74 million at the end of September 2016 to 1,127.37 million at the end of the year, a quarterly growth rate of 7.40 percent. The year-over-year growth rate was 11.5 percent.

At the same time, the fixed network subscriber base declined from 24.49 million to 24.4 negative  4.4 percent, a study by TRAI notes.
