Business models and use cases will be a huge part of the 5G era, since the hope is that 5G will provide a foundation for a huge shift in account base. Where mobile networks traditionally have earned revenue by selling network access to humans using their devices, the 5G network is expected to be the first mobile network that enables massive use of the network by sensors.
And, given the exhaustion of traditional revenue sources (voice, messaging, human internet access), those new revenue sources might very well represent the bulk of organic growth opportunities for most mobile service providers. A new white paper by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) suggests how many of those use cases could develop.
The coming 5G networks will feature much more use of virtualized access than has been the case for earlier mobile radio access networks, and a higher degree of integration between licensed and unlicensed network capacity, including use of public network and private network assets. In other words, sharing of assets will be a big potential value of the new network.
The coming 5G networks might have use cases for public voice networks--especially mobile substitution; IoT and M2M; critical communications and enhanced mobile broadband, ATIS argues.
