In case you had any remaining doubts about Comcast’s entry into the mobile services business, consider that a new job posting for a business development VP seeks a candidate with “broad knowledge of the U.S. mobile industry and global wireless technology ecosystem” as well as “expertise with the MVNO category and MVNO agreements.”
Comcast also has filed to bid in the upcoming 600-MHz spectrum auction, and has rights to resell Verizon services, with a further right to become a wholesale buyer of Verizon Wireless capacity in the future.
Those rights were part of a spectrum sale by Comcast and other cable TV companies to Verizon in 2012.
Under that agreement, a consortium of cable companies led by Comcast sold nationwide spectrum licenses to Verizon for $3.6 billion and secured the rights to resell its wireless services.
In 2015, Comcast notified Verizon that it intended to activate the portion of the deal allowing Comcast to resell Verizon Wireless services.
It remains unclear whether Comcast will take a “Wi-Fi first” approach, but many believe that makes sense. On the other hand, many observers do not expect Comcast to rely on Verizon assets forever, which is one reason why an effort to win 600-MHz spectrum would make sense.
