KPN to Launch Nationwide LoRa Network for IoT in 2016

KPN will introduce its LoRa network to support Internet of Things apps later in 2016.

Although mobile and wireless networks to support human communications and apps focus on ever-higher bandwidth, the current thinking is that IoT apps and devices will require low power consumption more than bandwidth.

Hence the necessity of building a special-purpose LoRa network that cuts against the broader trend of movement towards general purpose IP networks that handle all media types.

IoT is the exception to the rule.

The new network is intended to support low-data-requirement devices.  KPN also has offered Machine-2-Machine (M2M) connectivity across 2G, 3G and 4G networks for the past five years, KPN says.

LoRa is intended to support relatively infrequent  low-bandwidth communications using devices run by  batteries that can run for up to 10 years.
