Testing Limits of "Permissionless Innovation"

Though much of the controversy surrounding methods that can be used by Long Term Evolution networks to bond 5-GHz Wi-Fi capacity concerns alleged interference and adherence to standards, there also are philosophical issues of some importance.

One hallmark of innovation in the Wi-Fi ecosystem is that it is permissionless. Within the bounds of air interface compliance, multiple protocols already operate. That is by design. Wi-Fi is “permissionless.”

On one level, any methods for bonding mobile and Wi-Fi resources have to respect interference guidelines. Beyond that, there is contention about how much “standards” should apply, and how much innovation is allowed.

But that is the issue. With all due respect for legitimate differences, some might argue that permissionless innovation should not suddenly be subjected to permission tests.

That said, philosophical issues do not drive investment. Business advantage drives investment.
