Mobile Money Could Represent $12.6 Billion in Operator Revenue

Global daily mobile money transaction values are exceeding predictions, says the GSMA.

In 2020, global daily transaction values exceeded $2 billion. Analysts expected to reach a volume of $3 billion a day by the end of 2022. This figure has been surpassed, with $3.45 billion transacted daily using mobile money platforms in 2022, GSMA says.

Africa is driving 66 percent of the activity, while transactions in North America are too low to measure. For mobile money providers, transaction fees ranging from 0.5 percent of the transaction amount up to 1.5 percent drive the revenue model for service providers.

Assuming $1.26 trillion in transaction face value, and a one-percent fee, that implies mobile money provider revenues of up to $12.6 billion.
