FCC to Begin Auction 110 of 100 MHz of Mid-Band Spectrum in October 2021

The Federal Communications Commission is moving ahead with plans to allocate another 10 MHz of mid-band spectrum for 5G and other uses, with bidding scheduled to start on October 5, 2021.

Auction 110 will offer 4,060 new flexible-use licenses in the 3.45 to 3.55 GHz band,  divided into ten 10-megahertz blocks licensed by geographic areas known as Partial Economic Areas (PEAs).

Some observers believe Dish Network, Comcast, Charter Communications and others who were quiet in the last big auction of mid-band spectrum in the C-band region, might have planned to make a bigger move in Auction 110, on the theory that AT&T and Verizon would bid whatever it took to win a big share of those assets.

That might mean lower prices for Auction 110 spectrum.

Licensees may win up to four 10-megahertz blocks (out of a total of ten) in the 3.45– 3.55 GHz band within any PEA at any given time for the first four years after the close of the auction. In principle, that means Dish Network, a cable company or other entity could acquire as much as 40 MHz of spectrum.
