5G Measurement Matters When Looking at 5G "Leadership"

When assessing 5G experience, methodology always matters. In recent tests of U.S. 5G, for example, RootMetrics found that AT&T had the fastest “everyday” downstream speeds; T-Mobile had the best availability while Verizon had the best data reliability.

No single service provider leads on all dimensions of performance or experience, using the “Everyday 5G” methodology used by RootMetrics.

That metric includes a combination of results recorded on both 5G-only and "5G mixed mode” experience.

The 5G mixed mode happens when a single user switches between 5G and 4G LTE during the same data activity, an experience becoming more and more common. With 5G growing fast and users switching between 5G-only and 5G mixed mode more and more often, Everyday 5G results offer the most accurate picture of the daily 5G experience when connected to 5G at least a portion of the time, RootMetrics argues.

RootMetric measurements also vary by the methodology it uses. The firm takes measurements of 5G-only experience as well as mixed access within a single data session (5G and 4G). When using the “everyday” method, T-Mobile’s 5G service was most available. Verizon claimed the fastest 5G median speeds.

Using the 5G-only method, AT&T had the most availability.
