Early Tests Show 5G Boosts Average Speeds 2.4 Times (Average) to 10 Times (Peak)

At the moment, 5G might really be more important for mobile operators as a way of supplying greater data capacity for end users than it is a value for consumer end users. To be sure, 5G also will create new revenue opportunities in the business customer space, as well as enabling mobile operators to compete in the fixed network internet access business.

For example, results observed on SKT, EE, Swisscom and Verizon networks using both new millimeter wave spectrum and spectrum below 6 GHz show average capacity gains of at least two times,  compared to existing LTE networks.

Peak performance gains topped 10 times improvements,  Signals Research Group has found. SRG also says subsequent tests showed further improvement.

SRG’s study also suggests that real-world, commercial millimeter wave networks perform better in non-line-of-sight conditions than many expected.

For consumers, the SRG study suggests, consumers should expect 5G speeds to be about 2.4 times to five times faster than 4G.
