Most small cells--whether for 4G or 5G--will be deployed at enterprise sites. Outdoor sites in urban areas are the second largest category of deployments. Few will be deployed in rural and remote areas, according to the Small Cell Forum.
Aside from deployment serving outdoor public networks, large indoor venues and enterprises, a significant number of residential small cells might also be deployed, essentially as signal boosters. There could feasibly be three times as many such small cells in use as used to support public and enterprise 5G network access.
