5G Requires 2 GHz of Capacity

Mid-band spectrum will be the driver of consumer 5G cost, GSMA suggests. GSMA recommends that governments and regulators: make 2 GHz of mid-band spectrum available in the 2025 to 2030 time frame. By about 2030 we could see early 6G deployments, suggesting that 5G will be a mainstay well into the 2030s.

As always, demand shapes supply requirements. High income countries will require from 1320 MHz to 3630 MHz of mid-band capacity.  Upper middle income countries will require from 1020 MHz to 2870 MHz, while lower middle income countries will require from 1320 MHz to 3020 MHz worth of capacity.

As always, it is the urban centers that require the most bandwidth.

As always, operators can use smaller cells to compensate for bandwidth shortcomings.
