How Mid-Band Spectrum Shows Up in Speed and Potential Market Share

Those of you with long experience in the mobile or connectivity businesses know that change never stops. No service provider with the “best” or “fastest” or “most available” network can expect to claim such distinctions over time. Eventually, the gaps close.

One observation we can make about U.S. service provider 5G downlink speeds is that mid-band spectrum really does matter. The latest Opensignal report on 5G speeds shows T-Mobile--the firm with the most mid-band spectrum in use--clearly in the lead for downlink speeds

Over time, these gaps will close, and could change, as AT&T and Verizon activate their new mid-band spectrum assets. Still, there are times when one firm has an advantage for a few years, as did AT&T when it had a monopoly on sales of the Apple iPhone.

All the leading providers have similar geographical coverage for their legacy networks (3G, 4G). As the 5G  networks are being built out, coverage changes virtually every week or month.
