AT&T to Rate-Limit Mobile 5G to 2 Gbps

AT&T now says its mobile 5G speeds will be “capped at 2 Gbps.” Think about that: AT&T implies the network could run faster, but will be rate limited to 2 Gbps, an absurdly fast data rate for a consumer mobile service.

The stated reason is to maintain continuity of experience: Many early customers on mobile 5G plans will experience wide differences in theoretical speed based on where they are, so the rate limitations on the high end are part of an effort to maintain a more consistent experience across the whole mobile network.

We should assume AT&T and other service providers will look to similar efforts in other ways, such as taking steps to ensure 4G fallback does not offer an unpleasant comparison.
