Hard to Separate 5G From AI, IoT, Private Networks Revenue Drivers

Many of the connectivity service provider revenue opportunities to be wrought by 5G actually are a combination of opportunities created by network slicing, internet of things, private networks and virtual networks. Fixed wireless supplied by 5G networks, out of region, especially, are among the new opportunities directly attributable to 5G.

And some might argue that, eventually, augmented intelligence, virtual reality and machine learning, used in conjunction with 5G networks, is what will result in new value creation, new use cases and therefore  revenue opportunities.

IoT will boost the number of mobile and other network connections. Still, over time, most of the IoT revenue upside will come from apps and platforms, as well as professional services to install and operate IoT systems and services.

In the near term, with the exception of fixed wireless, revenue upside in the 5G consumer markets might be relatively muted. Obviously, most of the new consumer 5G connections will displace an existing 4G connection. So gross revenue for 5G will grow, but net revenue for the service provider might not change much.
