Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange and TIM Brasil have completed the specification for the new gateway, and ADVA and Edgecore Networks have committed to developing the first product based on the Odyssey-DCSG, which is expected to be commercially available by the third quarter of 2019.
DCSG gives mobile operators the ability to deploy an open, interoperable, supplier-neutral cell site router, making it quicker and cheaper to upgrade existing sites and roll out new sites at scale. That is expected to support 5G networks and reduce cost.
Edgecore Networks will contribute the complete hardware design of the cell site gateway to TIP, and will make the Odyssey-DCSG product generally available in the third quarter of 2019. The Edgecore Odyssey-DCSG gateway is expected to enable service providers to deploy 4G and 5G wireless services with the economies of disaggregated open network technology.
The Edgecore Odyssey-DCSG cell site gateway will conform to the TIP DCSG specification for cell site deployment, supporting existing base stations and planned 5G base stations, and providing 25GbE backhaul uplinks.
As with all Edgecore open network products, the cell site gateway will support a range of commercial and open source software options, providing network operators with choices for NOS, SDN and orchestration platforms.
