It is not hard to find forecasts of internet of things connectivity revenue that approach eight percent of total mobile service revenue by perhaps 2020. Nor is it hard to find forecasts that IoT will represent only three percent of mobile operator connectivity revenue by perhaps 2025.
On the other hand, to the extent there is revenue growth in the global mobile services business, it is likely to come from IoT or other use cases we have not yet identified. The simple fact is that we are soon approaching the point where mobile service demand on the part of consumers is saturated.
At present, the implications are fairly clear: mobile operators that want to boost IoT revenues to 10 percent and higher will have to participate elsewhere in the value chain, beyond simple connectivity.
Most of the IoT revenue, after all, will come in applications, platforms, devices, installation and management.
