Ofcom, the U.K. communications regulator, expects to start an auction for 190 MHz of 4G and 5G mobile spectrum in late March 2018.
The spectrum includes 40 MHz in the 2.3 GHz band, which could be used to support either 4G or 5G, and 150 MHz of spectrum in the 3.4 GHz band expected to be used for 5G support.
Companies able to bid include:
- Airspan Spectrum Holdings Limited
- EE Limited
- Connexin Limited
- Hutchison 3G UK Limited
- Telefónica UK Limited
- Vodafone Limited
Spectrum caps will affect bidding strategies. Under the rules, no single firm will be able to hold more than 255 MHz of the “immediately usable” spectrum. Specifically, that means BT/EE will not be able to bid for spectrum in the 2.3GHz band.
Also, there is a cap of 340 MHz on the overall amount of mobile spectrum a single operator can hold as a result of the auction.
