3G is Winding Down

Although the next-generation mobile network launches about every decade, those networks tend to remain in use for 15 to 20 years. That suggests the era of 3G is winding down, 4G still has room to grow, while 5G gets started in 2019.

The problem for 3G, as useful as it remains for voice and texting, is that internet user experience tends to be worse than Wi-Fi. Long Term Evolution 4G was the first mobile network to feature performance better than Wi-Fi.

The next big change is 5G, which will offer performance equal to, or better, than modern fixed networks using optical fiber or hybrid fiber coax.

And though it once seemed as though existing fixed wireless internet service providers simply would not be able to compete, in terms of performance, with mobile 5G and other fixed network solutions, new troves of unlicensed and cheaper shared spectrum are a life preserver.

In the satellite access segment of the business, low earth orbit satellite constellations are a similar response to the challenge of staying reasonably competitive in the access speed and latency performance areas.
