3GPP Release 13: Both Narrowband for M2M and Broadband Enhancements

It always is difficult to build or design one network that does everything equally well. So it is with the latest advances in the 3GPP “Release 13” for Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A), which includes mechanisms for much-higher and much-lower bandwidth modes. The former for people using smartphones and other devices; the latter for machines communicating with servers.

Release 13 specifies bonding of up to 32 radio carriers, with bandwidth up to 640 MHz, as well as machine-to-machine communications requiring as little as 1.3 MHz of bandwidth, with 600 kHz under study. The narrowband mode supports transmission speeds ranging from 70 kbps to 240 kbps.
