Has U.S. Mobile Net Adds Trend Changed for the First Time in 7 to 8 Years?

AT&T says it added more net new mobile accounts than any of the leading mobile service providers in the fourth quarter of 2021. AT&T also says it gained more mobile subscribers in 2021 than in the previous ten years combined.

If the trend continues, it will mark an important possible change, as T-Mobile has been adding the most new accounts for most of the last seven years or so, since 2014

AT&T’s gains do not seem to be the result of a decline in the rate of net account additions in the U.S. market, which have ticked upwards during the Covid pandemic. Most observers expect a return to more normal levels of growth in 2022.

Both T-Mobile and AT&T seem to have benefitted from low churn levels as well, during 2021. Still, AT&T’s performance is noteworthy. A ”net account gain” trend in place for seven to eight years possibly has broken.
