In 2018, Phone Made Bigger Speed Difference than Service Provider

According to Speedtest, the variance in mobile data speeds between an iPhone X and a Samsung S9 is about as great as the differences in typical speeds between the four major U.S. mobile service providers. On those four networks, measured speeds were between 6 Mbps and 10 Mbps based solely on the use of either a Samsung S9 or an Apple iPhone X.

Without considering the actual device, speeds on the four major U.S. carriers differed by about 7.5 Mbps from fastest to slowest.

In other words, the choice of device mattered more, in the first half of 2018, than the selection of a service provider, at least on a national basis.
