AT&T, Verizon Have High Network Utilization, Need Millimeter Wave

There is a real simple reason why Verizon and AT&T are interested in millimeter wave spectrum: they run networks that are among the most highly loaded in the world. Verizon, in 2017, had the highest network loading of developed world mobile operators. AT&T had the fifth-highest loading.

And in the U.S. market, there has not been lots of spectrum that could be used to support 5G, though additional mid-band spectrum is expected over the next several years. That is nice, but since all the leading four national U.S. mobile operators are launching 5G already, AT&T and Verizon could not wait.
