5G Gadflies are Just That

It is not hard to find casual criticism of the 5G launches under way by all the U.S. mobile firms. “No phones, limited service” are issues, yes, for good reasons.

It always takes time to build a brand-new mobile network across a continent-sized country. It always has; it always will.

Near-ridicule of the mobile operators for launching in just a few locales, with few devices, is misplaced.  The next-generation network, mobile or fixed, always is a multi-year effort. There are not capital or human resources to do it any other way.

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile US have begun 5G deployments, and AT&T and Verizon have begun selling service. T-Mobile US is building, but is waiting for the device ecosystem to become more robust before launching service.

Sprint's 5G launch is slated for May 2019, in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and Kansas City. Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington D.C. also slated to launch in the first half of 2019.
