Though fixed wireless arguably remains a niche access technology, it is getting new emphasis for some access applications, including high-rise apartment buildings and rural access, as well as early 5G deployments by Verizon and possibly AT&T.
EE, the U.K. mobile operator, also has announced a program using its 4G LTE network to connect as many as 580,000 rural U.K. homes at speeds as fast as 100 Mbps.
For those homes, that could mean a boost of downstream speeds of as much as an order of magnitude, as the prevailing speeds in rural areas tend to be about 10 Mbps.
