U.S. Mobile Operators Had 25 Million to 52 Million Machine-to-Machine Accounts Active in 2014

Many would argue that the Internet of Things is vital for mobile service providers because it represents the next big wave of revenue opportunity, once sales of mobile data connections reach saturation.

In 2014, there were more than 25 million, and perhaps as many as 52 million U.S. machine-to-machine connections in service.

In 2014, Berg Insight, for example, reported that AT&T had 16 million M2M subscribers, while Verizon Wireless had nine million accounts in service.

SNL Kagan estimated that in the second quarter of 2015, AT&T had a connected device base of 23.4 million, Verizon Wireless had 16.3 million, Sprint had eight million, and T-Mobile had 4.5 million M2M accounts in service.
