Verizon Wireless says it has nearly four million customers using voice over LTE service, which it launched in September 2014, out of about 104 million retail postpaid connections.
That matters because a nearly-complete transition of customers to VoLTE will be required before Verizon Wireless can shut down its 3G network.
Somewhat ironically, Verizon has been relying on the 2G network for voice services. Also ironically, that means the Verizon 2G network could remain active longer than 3G, since most of Verizon’s data traffic already is carried on the 4G network, while most of the voice is carried on the 2G network.
Even if some argue the value of VoLTE is its performance and quality, perhaps the most essential value is that VoLTE will allow Verizon to reclaim scarce spectrum to support data operations.
