Over the next decade, mobile operators running 5G are virtually certain to adopt 5G core networks as well, even if it is possible to support 5G using the 4G core network. Perhaps surprisingly, many service providers appear unconvinced of the magnitude of the advantages of operating a virtualized 5G core network.
A slim majority of respondents to a Heavy Reading survey expect 5G core to produce “clear benefits to the customer experience for consumers (52 percent) and enterprises (57 percent).
Some 37 percent expect that consumer experience will “probably” be better while 36 percent believe enterprise experience “probably” will be better.
Some 64 percent of respondents say the primary reason to deploy 5G core is to “offer advanced new services” to customers.
Though 48 percent seem to believe network slicing is an “attractive” proposition, many are not certain about the business case. Some 30 percent of respondents believe there is “a strong business case” and that network slicing is “very attractive.”
