5G Spectrrum, Use Cases, Will be Heterogenous

With the caveat that there always are variances between countries and service providers in the same country in terms of specific frequencies used for mobile communications, 5G will be unusually heterogeneous.

Though a historic use of millimeter spectrum is the biggest new element, necessitating fiber-deep backhaul and small cell architectures, 5G will in principle use any available spectrum, licensed and unlicensed.

Also, to a possibly greater degree than has been common, 5G could rely for financial success on new use cases for enterprises, including internet of things, smart cities and so forth. Up to, and including 4G, the business model has been anchored by consumer communications.

Incremental new revenue in the 5G era might ultimately rest on new enterprise use cases, even if 5G also might be viewed as the latest evolution of platforms to support more capacity for consumer internet access.
