3GPP Supports 5G NR in Unlicensed Spectrum

3GPP Release 16 now will support 5G NR in unlicensed spectrum.

Licensed assisted access NR-U (LAA NR-U) extended the capabilities of LTE-U/LAA from 4G LTE to 5G NR. Stand-alone NR-U allows stand-alone operation in unlicensed spectrum, and therefore could be used by an enterprise or any other entity that does not own licensed spectrum.

Use cases might include private 5G networks dedicated for a specific application such as industrial IoT or mobile broadband for enterprises.

Open mobile broadband 5G services offered by new service providers such as today’s cable operators and internet service providers or neutral host service providers in public venues such as sports stadiums and malls are other obvious use cases.
