Will 5G Replace Wi-Fi in the Enterprise?

Enterprises might well be able to use 5G as a replacement for Wi-Fi, argues Randall Stephenson, AT&T CEO. “5G will become the way businesses network,” he says. “Wi-Fi probably goes away.”

Some believe the 5G era will lead to big changes in access network connectivity, including the relative reliance on Wi-Fi offload for smartphone connections; substitution of fixed wireless for fixed network access; use of private 5G or private 4G for indoor enterprise communications and new ways to use shared or unlicensed spectrum in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.

What is debatable is customer behavior and the extent of behavioral changes. We can argue about whether it is small business or enterprise that benefits most. It is reasonable to argue that shifts in connectivity platforms could happen as 5G competes with Wi-Fi as an indoor connectivity platform.

We can argue as well about the extent to which consumers simply stay connected to the mobile network when they have 5G. What is indisputable is that changes of some magnitude are possible in the 5G era.
