Mobile Generations Illustrate Principle that 1/2 of All Revenue has to be Replaced Every Decade

In the mobile business, about half of total revenue tends to be replaced about every decade, as can be seen by revenue contributed by the various network generations (2G, 3G 4G). That is a disguised phenomenon in developing markets, since subscription growth and adoption of mobile internet services continues at a robust rate.

In developed markets, where there is little actual subscription growth, and ignoring for the moment changes in the volume of revenue contributed by various sources, older generation accounts drops as much as accounts from the latest generation grow.

The point is that “5G revenue” forecasts essentially are driven by cannibalization of subscriptions to other older networks.

Still, that shows well the principle that half of all current telecom revenue is replaced about every 10 years.
