Can 37 GHz, 39 GHz be Used to Support Both 5G and Satellite Uses?

The argument that existing licensees have essentially been squatting on spectrum that has not been used is a growing complaint of many industry participants, who cite the inefficiency of such non-use when more spectrum is needed for communications purposes.

Also, there are a growing number of instances where satellite and mobile interests clash over the use of spectrum formerly reserved for satellite uses.

Straight Path Communications, which wants to redeploy former satellite spectrum to support 5G, argues that, “in fact, the satellite industry has made no use of the 37/39 GHz band and has done nothing to seek any imagined regulatory changes necessary for additional use.”

Among the issues raised by Boeing and the Satellite Industry Association is that 5G operations will cause a great deal of interference with satellite transmissions.
