Mobile Firms Adopt TM Forum APIs

The TM Forum has developed a set of application program interfaces (APIs) that simplify the process of creating and supporting applications running on telecom networks.

Axiata, Bharti Airtel, BT, China Mobile, China Unicom, NTT, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone have formally adopted the suite of digital service management APIs put together by TM Forum.

Lester Thomas, chief systems architect for Vodafone Group said common APIs are important for developing a “standards-based ecosystem” that will enable telcos to employ best practices learned “from hyper-scale Internet companies.”

Of course, having an API framework does not guarantee application success. Developers tend to believe that the billing API is the most valuable, followed by identity. Telcos have made messaging APIs broadly available, but developers do not seem to find that function so compelling.
