Some one billion people will use mobile as their only form of Internet access in 2015, and more than half will live in Asia. Global revenue for such services already exceeds US$137 billion annually.
The mobile-only customers will account for 28 percent of all mobile broadband users globally or 13 percent of the world’s population in 2015.
Ovum forecasts that the Asia-Pacific will dominate the mobile-only broadband market, with users forecast to grow from 119.1 million in 2011 to 518.4 million by 2015.
In 2014 there were 258 million users worldwide accessing mobile broadband services using notebook computers.
Average revenue per user will not keep pace with data consumption or customer growth, however, Ovum notes.
More traffic will be offloaded from mobile networks than remains on the mobile networks by 2016, according to Cisco.
