In many ways there is an analogy between the "electricity" industry and "communications" industries. Both electricity and communications are consumed by other industries and products.
In many ways, the same is likely to be true for coming Internet of Things apps, devices and services. It is likely that many of the sensors will rely on mobile or other wireless networks for connectivity.
How much of the total value of all IoT activities will be far greater than that of the "connectivity" services. That is one reason why many telecom firms believe they should, or can, create roles as service and app providers, rather than angling only for the "dumb pipe" communications function.
