Spectra Wireless and Microsoft 4Afrika have launched Africa’s first commercial service network using TV white spaces in Ghana.
Spectra Wireless is the first company in Africa to offer a consumer Internet access service leveraging TV white space technology.
“We are breaking away from the standard way of selling Internet services in Africa,” says Sam Darko, Spectra Wireless country leader.
The djungleEd service bundles education-oriented applications, affordable devices and access based on use of Wi-Fi, not mobile access, for example.
Microsoft Office 365 and The Microsoft Virtual Academy, Skype and Facebook are featured applications.
Users also have access to zero-interest loans to purchase Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell and HP devices.
The cheapest data package starts at just two Ghana cedi per day and provides 24 hours of access. Other plans offer weekly or monthly access.
The launch shows the importance of creating sustainable business models, not just providing Internet access.
