CAT Telecom has decided not to participate in the upcoming November 2015 fourth generation mobile spectrum auctions spectrum auctions. CAT Telecom sells 3G mobile services, so the decision not to bid suggests the firm eventually will have to take some other route to 4G, if it wishes to remain in business over the longer term.
The decision means CAT Telecom will not, in the near term, be able to challenge Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communications (DTAC) and True Move as the leaders in the mobile services market in Thailand.
CAT Telecom is the former monopoly supplier of international communications and some mobile services for Thai customers. CAT Telecom remains a major supplier of wholesale infrastructure within the mobile market, however, earning more than half its total revenue from wholesale mobile infrastructure.
